I love working with Bethany House Publishers as one of their book reviewers. Yes, this means that I did receive a copy of A Light on the Hill, but my review of it is my opinion. I value honesty, and I’ll give it to you straight. But it is my biggest pleasure to be able to swoon over a well-written, layered story with interesting Biblical history woven throughout.
A few months ago, I read Wings of the Wind by Connilyn Cossette. When A Light on the Hill showed up on my horizon, I knew I just had to read it.

About A Light on the Hill
Seven years ago, Moriyah was taken captive in Jericho and branded with the mark of the Canaanite gods. Now the Israelites are experiencing peace in their new land, but Moriyah has yet to find her own peace. Because of the shameful mark on her face, she hides behind her veil at all times and the disdain of the townspeople keeps her from socializing. And marriage prospects were out of the question . . . until now.
Her father has found someone to marry her, and she hopes to use her love of cooking to impress the man and his motherless sons. But when things go horribly wrong, Moriyah is forced to flee. Seeking safety at one of the newly-established Levitical cities of refuge, she is wildly unprepared for the dangers she will face, and the enemies–and unexpected allies–she will encounter on her way.

A Light on the Hill Struggles
I don’t want to just make up struggles just to have struggles. But, I suspect that you’ll not believe me if I don’t nit-pick somewhere. Oh, I can’t. I’ll have plenty of opportunities some other day to struggle with other books, but I truly fell right in love with the story that Connilyn Cossette offered up.
A Light on the Hill LOVEs
WHERE DO I BEGIN! OhmygoodnessIjustlovedthisbook. Seriously, though. The story swept me right along, and I didn’t fall out until Connilyn Cossette finished the book.
- Cities of Refuge – I know all about the Bible but this is new area of interest to me. I love that Connilyn Cossette circles her story around these Cities of Refuge rather than one of the main characters from the Bible.
- Flawed yet strong protagonists – Connilyn Cossette brings the dichotomy of human existence to life in each of her characters. After all, we are both strong and weak.
- Hello, I didn’t see that coming. I had a few of those moments throughout the book, but each twist made absolute sense. That’s SO skillful.
Cordially Barbara’s Review of A Light on the Hill
On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, A Light on the Hill by Connilyn Cossette is a fruit and nut trail mix. Each bite bursts with a variation of flavors, depending on what you chomp. Not completely sweet or savory, this mix journeys with you.
[book received. opinions my own.]
Moriyah escaped being a temple priestess but not before she was branded. Now, she lives her life behind a veil so as not to bring further shame upon her family. And yet somehow, her father finds a widow who is willing to marry her along with the dowry of her father’s vineyard. Right when life seems full of possibility, a horrible accident disrupts all plans and sends Moriyah running for her life.
Connilyn Cossette not only writes tough, flawed characters, but she also captures a page-turning plot that brings to life the curiosity of the cities of refuge. Although familiar Bible characters make appearances, the story portrays the power of owning your choices and still experiencing mercy. Every time I read a book written by Connilyn Cossette, I meet God in the pages. These fiction books refresh my own walk with the Lord.
If you want to see Biblical times come alive in your imagination, A Light on the Hill by Connilyn Cossette is for you.
